Giving a Darn

Hello Menders!

Archangel Beth, over at Bluesky, showed us a gadget called a speedweve-style darning loom. She uses it to patch up jeans, jackets, and other clothes.

Her posts are visible for logged-in people only, but it’s worth a click to log in so you can pop over and see some more of her project pictures, and links to sites she recommends to buy one from.

A gadget described by the user and photographer as follows:

A little contraption where a disc of wood is put behind the fabric, a rubber band holds it in place like an embroidery hoop, and then a metal topper with hooks is shoved into the wood disc's notch and rubber-banded into place. The hooks hold the top of the warp threads, and the bottom of the warp threads is stitched into the fabric in a hopefully straight line. I like to use the inseam as a guide because my lines tend to get crooked otherwise.

This image shows the warp threads all seated, and the first couple of weft threads are the bottom. I'm using embroidery floss.

I don’t have one of these, but it looks like the thread handling parts work somewhat like a loop-de-loom, which I do have; so, now I’m wondering how hard it would be to modify that into that.
